Meet Adina, She/Her

Adina Swan, LMHC, LPC, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts and Licensed Professional Counselor in Connecticut, specializing in therapy for adolescents, teenagers, young adults, and families. As the founder of Open Area Counseling Services, Adina provides compassionate, individualized psychotherapy and parent coaching to help young people navigate anxiety, depression, identity development, emotional challenges, and major life transitions.

Adina believes adolescence and young adulthood are among the most important—and often most misunderstood—stages of life. Rather than viewing the teenage years as something to simply “get through,” she sees them as a meaningful period of self-discovery, personal growth, and possibility. Her therapeutic approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and developmentally informed, creating a supportive environment where teens and young adults can build confidence, develop coping skills, and better understand themselves.

Experience in Adolescent and Young Adult Mental Health

With approximately 15 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, young adults, and families, Adina has worked across a variety of mental health settings, including in-home therapy, residential treatment, outpatient counseling, and community-based mental health services.

Adina earned her Massachusetts Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) credential in 2016 after completing her post-master's clinical training at Wayside Youth & Family Support Network in Framingham, Massachusetts. There, she provided in-home and outpatient therapy to children, adolescents, and families throughout the MetroWest Boston area.

In 2018, Adina became the Clinical Director of North Crossing, a therapeutic group home in Newton, Massachusetts, serving adolescents ages 12–18. She later joined Walker Therapeutic & Educational Services in Needham, Massachusetts, where she provided outpatient therapy to teenagers and young adults, including supporting clients through the emotional and social challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before establishing Open Area Counseling Services in 2026, Adina spent four years at Westwood Youth & Family Services in Westwood, Massachusetts. In this role, she provided individual psychotherapy, adolescent mental health counseling, and parent coaching. She also facilitated high school volunteer programs and led therapeutic groups for elementary and middle school students, helping young people strengthen emotional regulation, coping strategies, and interpersonal skills.

Parent Coaching and SPACE Treatment for Childhood Anxiety

In addition to providing individual therapy for teens and young adults, Adina specializes in parent coaching and support for families navigating childhood and adolescent anxiety.

In 2025, she completed formal training in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) through the Yale Child Study Center. SPACE is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment designed to help parents respond effectively to childhood anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Through individual parent coaching and structured SPACE parent groups, Adina helps caregivers develop practical strategies to reduce family accommodation of anxiety, strengthen supportive communication, and build confidence in their children's ability to manage challenging emotions.

This approach can be particularly beneficial for families whose children are reluctant to participate in traditional individual therapy.
